Double Eagle gold coinThe double eagle coin was minted in US. Till now there have been two major types of the double eagle gold coin. Although over the years we have seen six minor deviations, the most prominent is the two different forms of Liberty head and Saint Gaudens. The liberty head or the cornet was minted between 1849 and 1907.The Saint Gaudens was minted between 1907 and 1933.For the liberty head there has been three versions, they are as given below. The first version was produced between 1849 and 1866. These coins did not have a motto on it; but they had a value of “Twenty D”. The second version was that of Liberty head carrying a motto, this coin also carried the value of “Twenty D”. These coins wee minted between 1866 to 1876. The third and the final version of this gold coin were minted between 1877 and 1907. It had a value showing 20 dollars and also had a motto on it. There also three versions of Saint Gaudens. 1. In 1907 these coins did not have a motto and they had roman numerals inscribed on it. 2. In 1907 and 198 the coins were low reliefs. Even these coins did not have a motto but they had Arabic numbers used instead of roman ones. 3. The coins from 1908 and 1933 were almost alike the former coin. It was also low relief and had Arabic numerals but these coins had a motto unlike the previous one. For some unknown reason the US president in 1933 President Roosevelt announced that all the coins were top become illegal. He stopped the coinage of all gold coins, it became illegal to even own these coins. The collectors were able to retain the coins that they already had but the gold made coins that were made in 1933 were never legally released. Despite the restriction, some of these double eagle coins of 1933 were stolen. Many of these coins were recovered but some of the coins were never found. In 2002 one such coin was put up or auction, the lucky person who got the coin had to pay a whooping amount of $7590020. Before the auction of 2002 the highest price that was paid for any coin was $4140000for a silver dollar made in 1804. The reason why this coin fetched such a large sum was that this is the only coin that has managed to get the status of a coin that can be legally possessed. double_eagle_gold_coin |
